Natural reserves
Jilin Province has 36 existing natural reserves, 13 of which are of state level. They have a total area of 2,230,000 hectares, accounting for 12.26% of the province’s total land area. In 1980, UNESCO identified Changbai Mountain as the "Man and Biosphere" protection network. In 1992, Changbai Mountain was rated as the International A-class nature reserve by the World Conservation Union.
Ecological construction
The ecological environment of Jilin Province has preferable basic conditions. In 1999, the state approved Jilin Province to be a pilot province for ecological construction. In 2001, the province implemented the "Outline for the Overall Planning of Ecological Construction in Jilin Province". In 2006, Jilin Province established Changbai Mountain Protection and Development Management Committee to carry out centralized management and protection of Changbai Mountain development. Since the implementation of ecological planning and construction, Jilin Province has speeded up construction of agricultural protection forests, increased 255,000 mu of agricultural protection forests, and completed renovation of 600,000 mu of defective agricultural protection forest belts. It has started the project of replenishing water to Xianghai and Momoge Wetland Reserve, namely, introducing water from Tao’er River and Nenjiang River to guarantee ecological water use of such two reserves. It has carried out the ecological migration project in the core area and buffer area of Xianghai and Momoge national nature reserves, which has completely changed the western ecological environment and provided strong ecological support for increasing food production. The province has built 23 ecological demonstration areas with an area of 117,100 square kilometers, accounting for 62.5% of the province’s land area. 12 counties (cities, districts) have been named the national ecological demonstration zones and 13 villages and towns have been named the national environmentally beautiful villages and towns.
