Profile of Jilin Province

  Jilin Province is often abbreviated as Ji, which is located in the middle of Northeast China. The position of Jilin Province is mainly embodied in three approximately “2%”: an area of 187400 square kilometers, accounting for 1.95% of the country; in 2012 the population is 27.504 million, accounting for 2.03% of the country; GDP in the end of 2012 has achieved 1193.782 billion RMB, accounting for 2.31% of the country. It governs one sub-provincial city, 7 prefecture-level cities, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Changbai Mountain and 60 counties (city, area). Changchun city, the provincial capital, is the province’s political, economic, educational, financial, cultural and transportation center. Changhun is one of the largest cities of China. It is a famous city with the name “Motor City”, “CINECITTA”, “Cultural City”, “Forest City” and “Sculpture City”. 

  The prominent characteristics of Jilin province could be summarized as “One center, Two Base Places, Three Advantages”. 

  “One Center”--- Jilin province is located in the central area of Northeast China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia and East Siberia. It is the central location in the Northeast Asia. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) actively supports international cooperation in the development of Tumen River area. Jilin province plays an important part, as it has the superior geographical conditions of development of the Northeast Asia region cooperation. 

  “Two Bases”--- Jilin province is China’s important industry base and commodity grain production base. Jilin province manufacturing industry is quite developed, with three pillar industries: automobile, petrochemical, agricultural products processing, and its advantage industries: medicine, electronic information. Jilin province is located in the world famous “Golden Corn Belt”, and is the famous “Land of Black Soil”. The agricultural production conditions are advantageous. Over the years, the food goods rate, food per person and per capita meat of Jilin province has a quantity ranked first in China. 

  “Three Advantages”--- Science and technology education, ecological environment and the important resources of Jilin province have relative advantages. The amount of scientists, engineers and college students per million people ranks in the first group of the nation. The gross higher education enrolment rate has reached to 32.3%. Jilin province has 36 nature reserves, holding complete province 12.26% of land area. Forest coverage rate of Jilin province is amount to 43.4%. The east part forest coverage rate reaches more than 70%. It is the national ecological pilot province. Jilin province has rich mineral resources. Oil shale, Wollastonite, Volcano slag mineral reserves has ranked first in China. The development potential is enormous.
